“Interchange” and “intermix” are two critical definitions of instrumentation tube fittings that are often confused with one another. Interchanging refers to using one manufacturer's nut and ferrule system with another manufacturer's body to build a single tube fitting assembly to ensure a tight, leak-free connection. Intermixing is a more general practice, where technicians and operators mix and match any combination of components—not just the nut and ferrule—with compatible components by other brands.
SSP manufactures interchangeable and intermixable components that are compatible with other brands. Our components are built to meet or exceed the pressure ratings and other standards of instrumentation systems. Learn more below about the differences between interchanging and intermixing, as well as the different tube fittings available.
Knowing the difference between interchanging and intermixing is crucial for ensuring that operators construct instrumentation systems that are safe, reliable, and fully functional. Following the wrong information to repair fittings could endanger facilities or lives.
Many sources regarding interchanging and intermixing contradict one another. For example, some manufacturers insist intermixing and interchanging cannot create reliable, safe fittings. Some claim that interchanging is safe but intermixing is not. Others say that both interchanging and intermixing are safe practices as long as they are performed with compatible components.
SSP falls in this last category. As experts in fitting, valve, and tubing systems, we know that interchanging and intermixing are both acceptable practices with the right expertise and components. At SSP, we have successfully intermixed and interchanged components with approved Swagelok®, Hoke®, and Parker Hannifin® parts. Before attempting interchange and intermix processes in your facility, confirm that you’re working with properly rated components and have the appropriate guidance.
At SSP, we manufacture and offer different designs of instrumentation tube fittings.
- Dual-Ferrule Duolok® Tube Fittings
Duolok®, our dual-ferrule tube fittings provide easy intermixing capabilities with both Swagelok® and Parker A-Lok® fittings. Duolok® fittings can operate in systems with pressure levels of up to 12,100 psig* and accommodate a temperature range of -425 °F to 1,200 °F. They are also available in a wide range of material options—including 316 SS, Alloy 400, C-276 and brass—for maximum compatibility.
*Duolok tube fittings are rated to the maximum allowable pressure rating of the tubing it connects.
- Single-Ferrule Unilok® Tube Fittings
Unilok®, Our single-ferrule tube fittings can intermix with Parker CPI™ fittings to provide a reliable, leak-proof connections in instrumentation and process tubing systems. They can withstand pressures of up to 12,100 psig* and a temperature range of -425 °F to 1,200 °F.
*Unilok tube fittings are rated to the maximum allowable pressure rating of the tubing it connects.
- Dual-Ferrule Griplok® Tube Fittings
Griplok®, Our dual-ferrule tube fittings are also rated for pressure levels of up to 12,100 psig* and temperatures between -425 °F to 1,200 °F. These parts are compatible with Hoke Gyrolok® fittings for intermixing applications and are available in a wide range of materials and shapes.
*Griplok tube fittings are rated to the maximum allowable pressure rating of the tubing it connects.
In Part 1 of our instrumentation tube fittings series, we outlined the differences between our Unilok, Duolok, and Griplok fittings. Each of these fittings were developed with clear, specific goals in mind: to provide safe and reliable connections and to intermix and interchange with other tube fittings from approved manufacturers. SSP warrants the performance of our instrumentation tube fittings assembled with intermixed and interchanged components from Swagelok®, Parker Hannifin®, and Hoke®.
Many of our customers opt to interchange and intermix their tube fitting components in order to get the maximum value from their spend. SSP's tube fittings are designed, manufactured, and quality controlled with utmost care to ensure complete interchange and intermixability with compatible brands of tube fittings.
If you have any further questions—like whether Parker® and Swagelok® fittings are interchangeable—we’d be happy to help. To learn more about interchanging, intermixing, or our instrumentation valves and tube fittings, contact us today.
Intermix means that any combination of SSP tube fitting components can be used with the components of a compatible brand giving the user the opportunity to achieve maximum safety and value.
Interchange means that the nut and ferrule(s) combination from SSP can be assembled with the body of a compatible brand, and vice-versa, to produce a working, leak-tight fitting.
